Long anticipated, Walmart+ has finally arrived as a membership-based deal with added bonuses.?The program, Walmart stated, brings together in-store and online benefits to save customers money and time. It also gives Walmart a competitive vehicle it can use to challenge Amazon Prime.
With the service, Walmart will connect members with 4,700 online stores, including 2,700 that offer delivery as fast as same day, the company maintained, and provide access to more than 160,000 items from tech and toys to household essentials and groceries. Membership costs $98 a year, or $12.95 a month, and includes a 15-day free trial period. Members receive unlimited free delivery on merchandise, fuel discounts and access to tools that make shopping faster. Walmart will open membership sign up on September 15. As it evolves the service, the company will add additional services and offers.
Walmart emphasized service to families and touted program elements such as Scan & Go, where in-store customers can scan their items as they shop using the Walmart app and pay using Walmart Pay, to demonstrate the kind of benefits it will provide to members. The fuel discount, at five cents off per gallon, will apply at just about 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA and Murphy Express fuel locations as well as soon-to-launch Sam’s Club gas stations.
Walmart will continue to offer all shoppers free curbside pickup, NextDay delivery and two-day delivery as well as other non-member fee-per-delivery convenience options.
“We are a company committed to meeting our customers’ needs,” said Janey Whiteside, Walmart’s chief customer officer. “Customers know they can trust us and depend on us, and we’ve designed this program as the ultimate life hack for them. Walmart+ will bring together a comprehensive set of benefits where we see the greatest needs from our customers and where our scale can bring solutions at an unprecedented value.”
